Speaker: Lukus Counterman - When it comes to worship, both the “who” and the “how” are important. We live in a day of “Consumer Christianity” and there never has been a more timely need for the second commandment. It teaches us that we must worship the correct God correctly. In other words, the church doesn’t need to simply figure out the right God to worship, it needs to figure out how to worship Him in the right way. In order to do so, our gaze must be directed to the glory of God as revealed in his Word. Now the Word is important, because we are not an image-centered religion. Ours is a religion of the book. We are not free to follow our own intuitions when it comes to worship. We are not at liberty to extrapolate God from our own imaginations. We cannot minimize or manipulate Him through the construction of man-made images. Instead, we must worship Him based on the revelation of his Word. Moses wrote in (Deuteronomy 4:12) “The Lord spoke to you out of the midst of the fire. You heard the sound of words, but saw no form; there was only a voice.” May the Lord help us listen to his voice and hear his Word today. Through that, may we learn to worship the true God truly.
