Gospel Growth: Introduction

Gospel Growth: Introduction

January 2015 - February 2015

As Christians, we are not merely called to a higher standard than that of the world around us. We are called to the highest standard of all--the life of Christlikeness. A life impossible for us on our own, because it is the exact opposite of our sinful nature and desires. But, in 2 Peter 1, we find good news. God has provided everything we need both in His power and His promises for our gospel growth into Christlikeness. And at the end of it all, God has left an unimaginable reward for those willing and faithful in pursuing His plan with all their might.

Speaker: Jon Kopp - God has designed trees to grow by soil, sunlight, and water. Working together, these vital elements bring a seedling to maturity over time. In the same way, God has designed His people to grow to maturity through specific means. Unlike a tree, however, we have the ability to choose whether or not we will cooperate with God’s work. While He is the great Cultivator, He expects us to diligently do our part for spiritual growth.

Speaker: Jon Kopp - For a tree, there is no growth without certain vital elements such as soil, sunlight, and water. For a Christian, there can be no spiritual growth apart from the person of Jesus Christ. The death and resurrection of Christ makes our spiritual growth possible. His Spirit gives us the power needed to live righteously. The knowledge of Christ matures us toward our predestined goal, Christ-likeness. Our spiritual growth is intimately connected to Christ. Without Him, growth is not be possible. Apart from Him, growth will not happen. For this reason, we must place Christ at the center of our growth.

Speaker: Jon Kopp - Priority implies importance. In our daily lives we all have priorities--things that are important for us to do and accomplish. Think back over the past week. What were some of your priorities? As we will see today, God sees gospel growth as a priority, and therefore, we must as well! So, today, let’s look to God’s word to discover the importance of gospel growth and learn why we must place a priority on it in our lives.
