Speaker: Lukus Counterman - Deuteronomy 7 describes how God’s people are supposed to be distinctively different from the Canaanite nations they are about to displace. Moses grounds this call in the electing purposes of God. You see, Israel wasn’t just another people group peppering the pages of human history. No, Israel was chosen out of love to be holy among the nations for the glory of God. So, they needed to live in light of their identity. And we must do the same. Centuries later, the apostle Peter would look to the church and say, “you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession… Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy… that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light” (1 Pet. 2:9-10). May we learn to live distinctively because we are the elect of the true and living God.
