Speaker: Lukus Counterman - I think we would all agree that in a perfect world there wouldn’t be wars or prisoners. Women wouldn’t be captured, people wouldn’t be murdered, divorce wouldn’t be a thing, and children wouldn’t be neglected or abused. But we don’t live in a perfect world. We live in a time where brutal realities expose human fallenness. We live in a place where depraved instincts and heart-wrenching cruelties define our grim existence. So as believers we need to learn how to work for the humane amidst the pollution of inhumanity.[1] We need to strive to mitigate the worst effects of sin amid human distress and misconduct.[2] We need to shine light into the horrific extremes of brutality and injustice. As Jesus said, we need to be the “salt of the earth,” slowing down its decay and decadence. Within the imperfections and brokenness of human life, may the Lord help us restrain evil and purge wickedness from our midst. May he teach us from Deuteronomy 21 how to lessen the impact of sin and wickedness in this world.
