Speaker: Will Galkin - Paul writes to the church of Philippi with much love in his heart for them. Throughout the epistle he shares his love for the church by saying things like, “I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy” (Phil. 1:3-4) and “I hold you in my heart” (Phil 1:7). Yet, when one reads the book of Philippians, they realize that there was a tension among the believers that threatened the unity of the church. Paul desired a unity in the church so that the individual members would link their arms together and advance the gospel of Christ. For the gospel to advance effectively, believers must cooperate together. Without unity the church will struggle to advance the gospel. Christians, we are better together. Today’s text takes the foundational truth from last week’s sermon, Christians are better together, and adds a very important lesson. There can be no unity without humility. Additionally, the text answers other questions such as: what does a humility driven unity look like and how does Jesus Christ, showcase this humility? We will take the commandment found in vs. 5, “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus” and use it as a lens to examine the rest of Philippians 2:1-11. We propose that Christians are to cultivate a unified mind of Christ by considering His humiliation and exaltation.
